Why the dress that looked good on the influencer didn’t look so good on you

Remember the dress that looked so good on that influencer you follow? You ordered it, it came through the mail and you excitedly tore the packaging to try it on, only to find out that it looked half as flattering on you. Sounds familiar? Each one of us has a unique body shape as well as assets that we want to flaunt (or hide), which means that there is no cookie-cutter solution when it comes to style.

One of the ways to reduce the chances of such disappointing purchases is to know your own body shape. Knowing what works for your body type can make the journey to finding the style that truly fits you a breeze, so that you can make the right style choices.

Step 1

Before identifying your body shape, you will need to measure your body. Measurements should be done with your clothes removed or with underwear underneath.

There are four areas to measure:

1. Shoulder

Ask someone for help to measure from the tip of one shoulder all the way around you.

  1. Bust

Measure around the fullest part of your chest, usually the level of your nipple. Make sure it is not too tight. Wear an unpadded bra when measuring.

  1. Waist

Locate the smallest part of your waist, usually above the belly button and measure it around. Make sure it is not too tight and you can fit one finger in between the measuring tape and your skin.

  1. Hips

Wrap the measuring tape around the widest part of your butt.

Jot down the measurements above, and sort the areas from smallest to biggest measurements to identify your body shape. The body shapes available on the Girlsourced Styling App are:

  • Pear
  • Identify yourself as a pear-shape if your bust and waist are smaller than your hips.
  • Inverted Triangle (known as Triangle in the App)
  • Identify yourself as an inverted triangle if the chest and/or shoulders are wider than the waist and hips.
  • Rectangle
  • Identify yourself as a rectangle if your bust, waist, and hips are all about the same size (no more than 5.1 cm).
  • Apple
  • Identify yourself as an apple shaped if your waist is wider (by 5.1 cm or more) than your bust and hips.
  • Hourglass
  • Identify yourself as an hourglass, if your waist is smaller than your bust and hips.

Now, you know your body shape, you are one step closer to understanding the style that is truly YOU. Complete your profile in the Girlsourced Styling App now and bid your fashion dilemmas farewell.
